Fit and employable at work training

A box lifted the wrong way today means sick leave with back pain three weeks from now. Yet instruction on this often consists of a list of house rules at the entrance. Dutch health and safety law requires more: employers must provide demonstrable instruction, including on safe lifting. For employers, that means two things: employees who start work fit and alert, and proof that the instruction was provided.

Skillcircle's Fit and ready for work training delivers both. Employees learn the house rules and the correct lifting technique in 3D. You can see who completed the training. Use the module on its own or as part of the complete onboarding and safety training in 3D.

Being fit and employable in the workplace

Not a theory book, but the safety rules for the four situations where things go wrong, shown step by step:

Sober and alert at work

No alcohol or drugs before or during work, and no prohibited substances on the work floor. Taking medication that may affect your alertness or reaction time? Report it to your supervisor before you start. You don't have to say which medication it is or why you take it.

No distractions on the work floor

Phones, earbuds and headphones stay in your locker: you must always be able to hear and see warnings, alarms and colleagues. Leave valuables at home. What you don't bring can't get lost or end up among the products.

Working together respectfully

Treat colleagues with respect, regardless of language, background or position. Experiencing bullying, unwanted behaviour or physical complaints? Report it to your supervisor or the confidential adviser. Reporting early prevents a small problem from turning into absence.

Ergonomics: lifting safely

Keep your back straight, bend your knees and hold the load close to your body. Lift with both hands and don't twist your upper body while lifting. Too heavy or unpractical? Ask a colleague for help or use a lifting aid, such as a hand truck, pallet truck or lifting device.

Demonstrable for every inspection and audit

The MetaChef portal shows which training each employee completed, how much time they spent and their knowledge-check scores. Export reports as CSV or PDF, ready to use for the Dutch Labour Authority, risk-assessment follow-up or audits. This helps you fulfil the information obligation under Dutch health and safety law and the measures against physical strain in your risk assessment.

Multilingual fit and employable at work training on any phone

The training is fully mobile, with no computer, classroom or supervisor required. The multilingual instruction is accessible to employees with different language and literacy levels. The 3D visuals make the material clear even for people with limited literacy, especially for a lifting technique that is easier to see than to read. Temporary workers can even complete it before their first working day.

Do your employees lift at fixed workstations, for example when packing or palletising? Combine this module with visual 3D work instructions for the correct posture at the workplace itself.

Frequently asked questions about being fit and employable at work

  • Is instruction on safe lifting mandatory?

Yes. The Dutch Working Conditions Act (Article 8) requires employers to provide effective information about the risks of the work, and the Working Conditions Decree (Chapter 5) requires them to prevent physical overload from lifting. The Dutch Labour Authority uses a maximum of 23 kilograms under ideal conditions: with both hands, close to the body and without twisting. When lifting from the floor, above shoulder height or repeatedly, the limit is lower. A certificate is not required, but demonstrable instruction is. This training provides that instruction and records the evidence for each employee.

  • Can I test employees for alcohol or drugs?

In most cases, no. Testing infringes on employees' privacy and is only permitted in professions where the law provides for it. What you can do is set clear rules on alcohol, drugs and medication before and during work, laid down in an alcohol, drugs and medication policy. If you have a works council, it has a right of consent on this. Precisely because testing is usually not allowed, instruction is your most important tool. This training ensures every employee knows the rules and records the evidence.

  • Does an employee have to report medication use?

Not which medication or why: that is medical data, and employers are not allowed to ask about it. What you can agree on is that employees report it when medication may affect their alertness or reaction time. You can then decide together whether someone should temporarily do other work, for example not on a forklift or at a machine. When in doubt, the GP, pharmacist or company doctor is the point of contact.

  • Is the training also suitable for agency and temporary workers?

Yes! This is especially important for temporary workers: as the hirer, you are responsible for their safety and instruction, just as you are for your permanent staff. And anyone who doesn't know the house rules on their first working day runs the greatest risk. Agency workers complete the training on their own smartphone, even before their first working day, so they have received instruction before stepping onto the floor. No supervisor or scheduled session is needed.
