Future Farm Lab

Let students run the farm

In this 3D farm simulator, students run virtual farms from across Europe. Step by step, they discover how to prepare a farm for the future.

Developed byMetaChef&EIT Food – co-funded by the European Union

Farming for the future calls for a new way of learning

Farmers make decisions every day: which crops to grow, how much fertiliser to use, and how to manage water, drought and nature. These decisions are connected, and their effects often only become clear years later. You can explain that on a whiteboard. Letting students experience it for themselves is another matter.

  • Every decision affects everything

Fertiliser, soil, water and yields are connected. Students learn to recognise these relationships.

  • Years in just a few minutes

Time moves forward, so students can already see what a decision will mean later.

  • Try it, then try again

Students test different approaches and learn from every result.

From decisions to insight in four steps

  1. Choose an assignment

Start with an assignment based on a real situation, such as a dry season or soil that is becoming depleted.

  2. Make decisions

Students decide what to do: which crops to grow, how to fertilise, how to manage water and how much space to leave for nature.

  3. See the results

Time moves forward. Students see the immediate effects of their decisions on soil, water, nature, yields and the business, as well as the effects over several years.

  4. Adjust and learn

Want to take a different approach? Try a new route. Students learn mainly by doing.

An entire farm on one screen

Students find themselves on a real farm and work through a mission step by step, from identifying the problem to restoring the soil.

For production companies and staffing agencies, Skillcircle offers a similar visual approach to safe onboarding in the agricultural sector.

What experts say

"With Future Farm Lab, we bring the farm into the classroom. In this 3D simulation, students make their own practical decisions about soil, crops and sustainability, and see the long-term effects directly. This makes regenerative agriculture understandable, tangible and interactive. A real connection between theory and practice."

Good to know

  • Who is Future Farm Lab for?

Future Farm Lab is for teachers and students in agricultural and crop production programmes. It helps them learn to work in ways that prepare them for the future. Students experience the effects of decisions on a farm for themselves, rather than just reading about them.

  • Do students and teachers need a separate account?

Sign in with your school account through SURFconext, just as you do with other MetaChef learning resources. If you already have a MetaChef account, you can use your existing login to get started straight away.

  • Does it work on the devices we use?

Yes. Future Farm Lab runs in the browser on laptops and tablets, and also supports VR and AR. You can get started directly in your browser.

  • Does it fit into our lessons and learning environment?

Yes. Use it on its own or as part of your curriculum. It works with existing learning management systems, so students can access it in the environment they already know.

  • What happens after I request a demo?

We will contact you within two working days to arrange a 20 to 30-minute appointment, online or at your location. We will show you the experience live and explore how it fits your programme. You can then decide whether to take it further.
